Our Board Members
Mark Austen
Mark has been Chair of the Board of Alpha Bank London since 2018 and is an Independent Non-Executive Director.
Mark has extensive experience of the financial industry through managing Price Waterhouse’s (latterly PricewaterhouseCoopers’) financial services consulting business around the world. He advised a large number of institutions especially on strategy and acquisitions, operations and back office, human resources, regulation, and technology over many years and written and presented extensively on such topics.
In his management role he had responsibility for a fee business of around $1.5bn revenue comprising 7500 partners and staff around the world. He was a member of PricewaterhouseCoopers global board and had a major role in effecting the sale of the consulting business to IBM which he subsequently joined, leaving in March 2005 to pursue a plural career.
Currently Chair of the UK Insolvency Service, Mark has held many appointments since 2005 including non-executive director of Standard Bank PLC, Mott MacDonald Group, and Chairman of Liverpool Victoria. Mark has also been chair of a large housing charity in Surrey and of one of the then Prince Charles’ charities, Arts and Business.
Mark is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and has attended Harvard’s Advanced Management Program.
Michael Brierley
Michael has been a member of the Board of Alpha Bank London since 2023, serving as an Independent Non-Executive Director, Chair of Audit Committee, Chair of Risk and Compliance Committee and as a member of the Renumeration Committee.
He was CFO and Executive Director of Metro Bank Plc between 2009 and 2018, helping lead the business from start-up to listing on the FTSE. He spent seven years at Capital One Europe in various roles including CFO UK, CFO Europe and CRO Europe. He has also served as CFO for Royal Trust Bank, Financial Controller at Industrial Bank of Japan (London Branch), Director Business Risk at Barclaycard and was co-founder and Deputy Managing Director and CFO of Gentra Limited.
He currently serves as a Non-Executive Director for Admiral Group PLC and is a member of the Audit, Remuneration, and Investment Committees. He also is Chair of Admiral Financial Services Limited and a Director and Trustee of the Rose Theatre Trust, as well as chairing its Finance and Risk Committee.
Michael is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and has a BA (Hons) in English Literature from the University of York.
Greg Ellison
Greg joined Alpha Bank London in January 2024 as CEO.
Greg has 26 years of experience in financial services, operating at Managing Director or CEO level for the past 16 years. He started his career in the UK working in regulated sales with HBOS before joining Barclays Wealth as Head of Banking and then Managing Director for the offshore businesses in Jersey, Guernsey, and the Isle of Man.
Following Barclays, Greg spent five years working in a privately owned multi-family office, setting up new businesses in Malta, UK, and Dubai. More recently, Greg was CEO of Capital International Group leading their wealth management businesses in the Isle of Man and South Africa. During his time with Capital, he founded and successfully launched a new digital corporate bank, Capital International Bank.
Greg holds a degree in Business Studies from Swansea University, an MBA from Henley Business School and executive diplomas from Oxford Said Business School and MIT. He is also a Chartered Director with the Institute of Directors.
Spyros Filaretos
Spyros has been a long-standing Member of the Board of Alpha Bank London as a Non-Executive Director.
Ιn 1985, Spyros joined Alpha Bank Greece, where he held key positions at different branches and Divisions (Organization, Human Resources and Treasury Management). He was appointed Executive General Manager in 1997 and General Manager in 2005. From October 2009 to November 2020, he served as Chief Operating Officer (COO). In December 2020, he was appointed Chief of Growth and Innovation.
Spyros is a Member of the Boards of Directors of Alpha Bank London Ltd and the Alpha Bank Cultural Foundation, as well as Chair of the Board of Directors of Efstathia J. Costopoulos Foundation. Moreover, he is a Member of the Executive Committee of Alpha Bank Greece. He has been a Member of the Board of Directors of Alpha Bank Greece since 2005.
Spyros studied Economics at the University of Manchester and at the University of Sussex, UK.
Clodagh Gunnigle
Clodagh joined the Board of Alpha Bank London in 2019 as an independent non-executive Director and member of the Board’s Risk Management Committee. She is also the Chair of the Remuneration Committee at Alpha Bank London.
She spent a large part of her executive career with the General Electric Company, GE Capital in various roles across Ireland, Connecticut – USA and London. Her roles included Finance, Risk Management consultancy, Chief Risk Officer and Global Chief Credit Officer across GE Capital’s diversified Banking and Financial Services platforms in Europe, Asia, and America. She also served as Group Chief Risk Officer for Arrow Global PLC before moving on to a Non-Executive career. In addition to Alpha Bank London, Clodagh is a Board member of Lowell UK where she also serves as Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee and Chair of Lowell Portfolio Ltd.
Clodagh is a qualified Chartered Accountant (FCA) with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland.
George Michalopoulos
George is a member of the Executive Committee of Alpha Bank Greece and the Chief Wealth Management Officer responsible for Private Banking, Advisory and Products, Business Management and Services and the Group Subsidiaries: Alpha Asset Management and Alpha Finance.
He has been with Alpha Bank for 30 years and holds a managerial position since 2005, having taken up various positions in Treasury related functions. He has also worked in the Treasury and IT units of Alpha Bank London for 4 years (1998-2001). He has an extensive experience in treasury, global markets and investments, transaction banking and investment banking.
He is a member of the Board of Directors of Alpha Bank Romania, Alpha Finance, Alpha Life and Alpha Ventures and a member of the Asset & Liability Committee of the Bank. He is also the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Auxiliary Pension Fund for Alpha Employees.
George holds a BCs degree in Mathematics from University of Athens and an MBA from City University Business School. He carries top professional qualification (category D) by Bank of Greece.
